Boston University

Supplemental Essays

Boston University asks for one essay from two options: a reflection on a social or community issue, or a focused Why BU. Both reward specificity about who you are and what you'd do on campus.

What BU looks for

  • Concrete involvement over stated passion — what you've actually done about an issue you care about.
  • Specific, researched reasons for BU rather than reasons that fit any large urban university.
  • A clear sense of how you'd contribute, not just consume, on campus.
  • Authentic motivation that connects your interests to BU's resources.

BU supplemental prompts (2026-27)

Social Issue or Why BU

300 wordsRequired

Choose one: (1) Reflect on a social or community issue that deeply resonates with you. Why is it important to you, and how have you been involved in addressing or raising awareness about it? (2) What about being a student at BU most excites you? How do you hope to contribute to our campus community?

How to approach it. For the social-issue prompt, choose something you've genuinely acted on and lead with that action — BU wants involvement, not just awareness. For Why BU, name specific programs, labs, or communities and tie each one to something you actually want to do, then show what you'd add to that community. In 300 words, depth on one or two threads beats a shallow tour of many.
