University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Supplemental Essays

UNC requires two short essays of up to 250 words each: one on a personal quality and its impact on a community, and one on an academic topic you're excited to explore. Both reward tight, story-driven writing over abstraction.

What UNC looks for

  • A single quality shown through one real story, not a list of strengths.
  • Authentic academic curiosity with a specific topic, not a vague love of learning.
  • Community impact that's concrete and proportionate — small and true beats grand and vague.
  • Economy of language, since 250 words leaves no room for throat-clearing.

UNC supplemental prompts (2026-27)

Personal Quality & Community Impact

250 wordsRequired

Discuss one of your personal qualities and share a story, anecdote, or memory of how it helped you make a positive impact on a community. This could be your current community or another community you have engaged.

How to approach it. Pick one quality and prove it through a single specific scene rather than describing yourself in adjectives. UNC cares about how you affect the people around you, so make the community and the impact concrete and verifiable.

Academic Interest

250 wordsRequired

Discuss an academic topic that you're excited to explore and learn more about in college. Why does this topic interest you? Topics could be a specific course of study, research interests, or any other area related to your academic experience in college.

How to approach it. Narrow to one genuine topic and trace where your interest in it actually came from. The excitement should feel earned through a real encounter — a class, a book, a problem you couldn't drop — not stated as a generality.
